Univ. of Iowa Health Care opens North Liberty Campus
After years of work, Iowa’s newest hospital is opening its doors.
NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG) - In an expansion of University of Iowa Health Care’s services, a new 470,000 square foot hospital is opening in North Liberty.
Ground was broken on the $526 million building in 2021. After years of work, the hospital will be welcoming its first patients Monday morning.
“There’s a lot of amazing features for the patients, but there’s also a lot of amazing features for our staff as well,” Emily Ward, chief nursing officer for the North Liberty Campus, said.
The new hospital will have a focus on specialty care, particularly orthopedics and sports medicine, but it will also offer emergency services with an emergency room and level 4 trauma center.
“When you look at in totality, all of the options that our patients have from quick care to urgent care to emergency care, they now have multiple options across really the entire corridor area,” Ward said.
This new hospital this will also open up space at the main campus in Iowa City. Ward says her team has had its sights set on today for a long time. She says they’ll have support on site to help through the hospital’s opening weeks.
“I think we’ve done a a really good job of trying to be as prepared as possible,” Ward said. “We’ve also talked with our teams about the need to be nimble and flexible in those first couple of weeks as we work through those bumps in the road that we know will be there.”
The hospital’s pharmacy, which will be open 24 hours a day, will also be accessible for non-UIHC patients.
