FORT ATKINSON, Iowa (KCRG) - The Fort Atkinson Fire Department says a railroad bridge caught fire this weekend.

The department says just after 6 p.m. on Saturday, crews were called to the burning bridge. The bridge was engulfed between County Road W14 and Roger’s Creek Road, near Fort Atkinson’s city limits, according to firefighters.

It took the department roughly four hours to put out the flames, assisted by Calmar Fire and Rescue, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office and railroad officials.

Photos shared by the department show the structure holding up the tracks was charred and smoking, with large plumes of smoke visible from far away.
