Officials investigating structure fire in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KCRG) - The Independence Fire Department were able to put out a spreading structure fire Friday morning, but it’s unclear what caused the fire.

Crews were dispatched at 10:58 a.m. to a structure fire on the 800 block of 9th Avenue Northeast.

Firefighters found a building was heavily burned with fire spreading to nearby buildings, according to a press release.

A photo of the fire shows the fire catching on power lines above the building and sprawling out on the ground.

Crews were able to contain the fire, and surrounding buildings were checked for fire spread.

Independence Light & Power, Independence Police Dept and Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident.
