Sioux City sees 63% increase in unsheltered individuals from 2025 to 2026

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - How many people are homeless across the country and here in Sioux City right now? Homelessness increased in Sioux City and, over time, has increased across the country, according to new data from federal and local sources.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development shared the latest numbers from the 2025 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report, the latest report given to Congress on Friday, May 29. The report is a snapshot of how many people were living on the street on a single night in the United States in January 2025.
Last year, 266,320 individuals were living unsheltered on a single night in January.
In total, 745,652 individuals were homeless on a single night in January, including those who were in shelters. HUD says this is a 27% increase since 2013 and a 3% decrease since 2024, attributable to decreases in Sanctuary Cities.
Sioux City sees 63% increase in unsheltered individuals
In Sioux City, the Point in Time Count took place on Jan. 28, 2026 into the next morning of January 29. It is conducted by the Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness. Several teams counted between 4 and 6 a.m. in known encampment areas. There were also volunteers scheduled to interview individuals at common services, such as the Gospel Mission meals and the Soup Kitchen.
In Sioux City, 70 individuals were counted as unsheltered, which is up from last year’s total of 43. That is a 63% increase.
The number of people staying in shelters was 254, which is down from the year before.
In total, 324 individuals faced homelessness in 2026, compared to 305 individuals in 2025.
These numbers were submitted to HUD for federal funding to support Siouxland organizations that are working on assisting with housing these individuals.
Resource fair scheduled for June 25
The Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness is hosting a Resource Fair on Thursday, June 25, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will be outside in the Siouxland Community Health Center’s lower parking lot at 10th and Pierce Streets.
There are expected to be organizations wanting to help with food, housing assistance, and medical needs. This is in coordination with the mobile showers the health center hosts each Monday and Thursday afternoon.
