DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) - UnityPoint Health will begin using artificial intelligence software to help streamline and inform care for patients through a partnership with Mayo Clinic.

The program, called Mayo Clinic Platform_Insights, uses de-identified patient information and research from Mayo Clinic to help doctors make treatment plans. The software was developed using more than 3 billion lab tests, 1.6 billion clinical notes and more than 6 billion medical photos.

The Chief Medical Officer for UnityPoint Health said the technology will not replace doctors but will help free up resources to provide more care, especially for rural patients.

“Our collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Platform Insights is really just additional tools in the toolbox,” said Dr. Gregory Johnson, UnityPoint Health chief medical officer. “It’s allowing our patients in more rural locations to get that level of clinical expertise, similar to how you would get in an academic medical center.”

Dr. Johnson said some providers even use AI to automatically take notes of patient visits.

The partnership comes as the Iowa Medical Society reports a statewide workforce shortage, with Iowa ranking 44th in the nation for patient-to-physician ratio.
