Multiple funnel clouds spotted across eastern Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Multiple funnel clouds have been spotted across eastern Iowa.

The conditions for funnel clouds are favorable today with the slow-moving showers we are seeing.

These cold air funnels form underneath the showers or weak thunderstorms when the air aloft is especially cold and when thick clouds are present.

These funnel clouds are typically brief and drop only a few hundred feet from the bottom of the cloud.

They rarely form a weak tornado or cause damage, so they do not pose a significant threat.

If you see a funnel cloud or a tornado, seek shelter indoors.
