Iowa State Patrol urges drivers to remember upcoming handsfree legislation for Memorial Day travel
Trooper Bob Conrad says it’s the perfect opportunity for drivers to start practicing putting down their phones.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Almost two months ago, Governor Kim Reynolds signed hands-free legislation, making it illegal to hold your phone while driving.
The law doesn’t go into effect for more than a month, but the Iowa State Patrol says it’s important to keep it in mind when traveling for Memorial Day.
Trooper Bob Conrad says it’s the perfect opportunity for drivers to start practicing putting down their phones.
“It’s going to be a big change for a lot of people to take their phone out of their hand when, here in the state of Iowa, it’s been that way ever since we’ve had phones.” he said.
Conrad says right now, Iowa State Patrol’s biggest focus is educating drivers on the change.
Specifically, when it will go into effect: July 1st, 2025.
“Good habits are always needing to be practiced. And and when we know that in less than a month and a half, we’re going to go ahead and and have hands-free legislation, try and teach yourself how to do it now.” he said.
But with almost 40 million drivers expected to travel by care for the holiday, Conrad says it’s especially important to remember to minimize distractions, drive sober, and plan ahead.
