Iowa State’s Ashley Joens was named the Cheryl Miller Award winner for the second-consecutive season. The Iowa City native is the first back-to-back winner of the award, which honors the nation’s top small forward.
“They’re a team that want a flow and a pace offensively to generate the open court,” said Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger. “We’re a team that prides itself on being a very gritty, half court defensive team who pressure the basketball and dictates what we want to do.”
Ashley Joens scored 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting and grabbed a dozen rebounds as the Iowa State Cyclones (24-4, 13-3 Big 12) beat Texas Tech 71-55 and assured themselves at least a share of the conference lead heading into a Monday showdown with Baylor.
The Cyclones needed every point they got, with four decisions and one major decision. The Cyclones started the meet down 6-0, and were later down 15-9, but came back both times with crowd-silencing victories.
