The district added police and district staff Tuesday, banned backpacks unless they were clear, and reduced how people could enter and leave schools... in an attempt to increase a sense of safety. But with the source of the threat still unknown during the school day, many still didn’t feel safe.
An audio message of a robotic voice claiming their plane to “shoot up the school” made it’s way around. One Cedar Rapids parent heard it hours before the district decided to cancel school on Monday. Immediately, she was concerned for her children’s safety.
It’s especially important for ICFD to practice going to these types of calls as they continue to see a majority of calls require emergency medical services.In 2022, they responded to 9,039 calls for service. 56% of those were Emergency Medical Service calls.
