Police and school officials on Tuesday addressed their ongoing investigation into a threat that caused the Cedar Rapids Community School District to close schools for a day.
The district added police and district staff Tuesday, banned backpacks unless they were clear, and reduced how people could enter and leave schools... in an attempt to increase a sense of safety. But with the source of the threat still unknown during the school day, many still didn’t feel safe.
An audio message of a robotic voice claiming their plane to “shoot up the school” made it’s way around. One Cedar Rapids parent heard it hours before the district decided to cancel school on Monday. Immediately, she was concerned for her children’s safety.
”Just seeing that support, even from people that we might not necessarily know. It’s just, it’s very hard to explain and there’s nothing that you can ever do to repay these people.”
All law enforcement are trained to look for signs of distracted driving such as swerving, constant speeding up and slowing down, and the obvious sign of the glow of a phone screen.
