CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The top freestyle wrestlers will be in Cedar Rapids on Friday, including several former Hawkeyes, for the American Wrestling League opener.
The event consists of two teams and 10 freestyle matches. The wrestlers battle for $10,000 prize money. Each wrestler does get $2500 for stepping onto the mat, but the winner of each match gets an additional $5,000.
"I think money has been a long time coming in wrestling," said AWL founder Wayne Boyd. "We have always been considered amateurs."
The event will on Friday at the U.S. Cellular Center at 7 p.m.
