Prairie's Ian Johnston raises awareness for drug and alcohol abuse

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The state golf tournament begins on Friday at Brown Deer Country Club in Coralville. For Prairie's Ian Johnston, he's playing for more than just himself.

For every birdie that Johnston makes, he takes donations that go directly to the Area Substance Abuse Council. So far, he's raised about $25,000. In 2016, Ian lost his older brother Seth to a heroin overdose in 2016 and he's on Ian's mind on every birdie putt.

"I always have a little celebration whenever I make a birdie putt," said Johnston.

Also, former Masters and Open champion Zach Johnson has helped get Ian's message out by narrating a feature done by cbssports.com.

"That meant everything because it can definitely help somebody," said Johnston. "That is what my goal is and Zach is such a big influence."
