ISU's Montgomery and Butler, plus Iowa's Nelson all leaving for NFL

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Both Iowa and Iowa State will be without some key players next season.

Iowa State running back David Montgomery and wide receiver Hakeem Butler declared for the 2019 NFL Draft on Monday.

Montgomery became the first Iowa State running back to rush for back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons since Ennis Heywood in 2000-01.

Butler also put his name in the record books setting a new school record for most yards in a season with 1,318 yards. He also had nine touchdowns on the season.

The last Cyclone to be drafted was linebacker Jeremiah George in 2014.

Iowa's defense lost another key piece for next season after defensive end Anthony Nelson also declared for the 2019 NFL Draft on Monday.

Nelson finished with a team-high 9.5 sacks. He had 23 sacks in 39 career games.

Nelson joins two other Iowa teammates who have also declared: Amani Hooker and Noah Fant. Junior tight end T.J. Hockenson is also expected to make a decision very soon.
