Dubuque Senior and Alburnett win tight matches in state tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Dubuque Senior advanced to the Class 4A semi-finals after beating MVC rival Iowa City West 39-36 on Wednesday.

The Trojans had a nine-point lead in the first quarter. Dubuque Senior fought back in the second quarter outscoring the Trojans 12-5 and took a 24-23 halftime lead.

Both teams kept trading leads in the second half, but it was Daquon Lewis' steal and layup with less than a minute left that gave Dubuque Senior the lead for good.

The Rams will face Waukee in the semi-finals at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday.

In Class 1A, Alburnett's magical season continues after defeating St. Mary's in the semi-finals, 39-37.

The Pirates controlled the first half leading 23-15 at halftime. They had a 10-point lead early in the third quarter, but St. Mary's closed the gap.

It was Izic Mackey who hit the game-winning putback for Alburnett. He finished with a team-high 19 points.

The Pirates will face defending state champion Grand View Christian at 2:10 p.m. on Friday.
