DES MOINES, Iowa. (KCRG) - he winningest coach in Iowa history, Bob Hilmer stepped on the state court today for the 11th time in his 55 year coaching career.
"Every state tournament is special and this is special to win a game down here three years in a row also." Hilmer said.
They say behind every great man is a great woman and that is the case again. Bob's wife Sheron watches, cheers and coaches the games from the handicap section way above the court.
"A lot of times when people are sitting with me I'll say they need to take a time out." Sheron said.
"Yeah she does plenty of coaching. She will let them know what they're doing wrong she will let me know what I'm doing wrong. She is not afraid to voice her opinion it's kind of cool funny." Bob said.
The last three state appearances have been extra special for Bob sharing it with his son his MIke (co-head coach) and his two grandson's Austin and Jake, who is arguably the best basketball player in the state.
"We are so proud of the kids and I'm proud of my son and proud of the grandsons as well as well as the rest of the team." Hilmer said.
Bob is now 79 years young but he is having the time of his life and he not about to give coaching anytime soon.
"When I was growing up I never wanted to be a major league ballplayer I never wanted to be a pro football player. I just wanted to be a coach so I've been able to realize that dream and just keep working at it i've enjoyed every minute of it." Hilmer said.
