NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa. (KCRG) - The Alburnett Pirates defeated the WACO Warriors 60-54 on Saturday night, clinching their first state berth in program history.

“After we got done with our little walk through tonight, we looked around the gym, we have all kinds of banners, banners for football, wrestling, track, but theres one missing up there for basketball." said head coach Jeff Christopherson. "We just told them you know what, we gotta get that up there.”

The Pirates were led by Hunter Caves who scored a game-high 23 points. Izic Mackey followed up with a second-best 17.

"Everybody that's been through Alburnett has wanted to make it to where we're at and it's just the biggest thing being the first team to make it to state. It means everything to us." said senior Izic Mackey.

Of all the teams that came before this 2019 squad, the togetherness stands out in this year's squad.

"We're just family. Everyday were just brothers." said sophomore Hunter Caves.
