Members of Sons of Jacob Synagogue found spray-painted Christian messages on their building Monday evening.

The words "Jesus Saves" and crosses were found spray-painted near the main entrance of the building.

Waterloo Police Captain David Mohlis says the incident is being investigated as vandalism. Police and synagogue leaders are reviewing surveillance video to see if it reveals any suspects.

Rabbi Erin Maidan says members of the inter-faith community plan to remove the graffiti together in a show of solidarity. Maidan says the synagogue has received many calls of support since the incident.

Aside from the vandalism itself, Maidan says the statement in the graffiti is offensive to Jews. She says the unspoken message is Jews are going to hell for not believing Jesus is the Messiah.

Sons Of Jacob Synagogue is the only Jewish place of worship in Waterloo.
