From a deep freeze to a big thaw

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - What a difference we experienced from last week to the weekend! Cedar Rapids spent a few days below zero, from 7 a.m. January 29 to 9 a.m. February 1. That’s about 74 consecutive hours! Then there was a big turnaround this weekend with about 46 straight hours above freezing, from 10 a.m. February 2 to 8 a.m. February 4.

Being above freezing for that long really whittled away the snowpack, and the fog sped the process up even further. Cedar Rapids’ snow depth was hovering around a foot as we turned the calendar to February, with a depth of 13 inches on Friday. By Sunday, it was down to a mere five inches, and the Monday evening observation will be even less.
