WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) - UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital has added a K9 to their team to help with safety and comfort for patients, visitors, volunteers, students, and other members of their team.
The malinois and Dutch shepherd mix named Krush was trained for five weeks at High Velocity Canine in New Hartford.
“Our family has always been dog lovers and my parents loved giving back for something that will benefit our community, so this was a perfect fit,” said Kathy McCoy, the trust’s donation designee. “Krush will be a tremendous asset for the hospital.”
The hospital was able to bring the dog to the hospital through a grant from the Allen Foundation and a $13,000 gift from the Robert and Elizabeth McCoy Charitable Trust.
Krush will be used to help with therapeutic interaction, to deter disruptive behavior, detect controlled substances, track missing people, reduce using restraints during de-escalation situations, and to enhance ALICE active shooter training.
The hospital says additional resources are still needed to fulfill all Krush's skills and abilities.
