Two badly burned during Bettendorf Diwali celebration

BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) – Firefighters responded Wednesday evening to a fire that injured two people at a home in the 2900 block of Katie Lane, near Belmont and Middle Roads.

KWQC viewers reported seeing fire, police, and medical vehicles along with a medical helicopter at the scene at around 7 p.m.

KWQC has learned the fire was started by an accident with an oil lamp that was being used to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

One victim's clothing caught fire, and a second person was then burned while trying to assist the first.

One was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and the other was flown to Iowa City for treatment.

Firefighters had left the scene by 7:15 p.m.
