DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) -- Firefighters continue to battle flames Monday at a popular Des Moines bowling alley.
The Des Moines Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at Plaza Lanes around 5:10 am.
At first, firefighters at the scene said the flames appeared to be under control and that only smoke was observed coming from the roof.
Not long after, the building became fully engulfed and the bowling alley's signature dome roof collapsed.
Crews at the scene told KCCI that firefighters were asked to stay back 50 feet from the building for safety reasons.
Fire crews said they plan to be at the bowling alley for hours are switching out crews to fight the fire.
Business owners in the area told KCCI that there were no recent renovations to the building and that they are not sure what sparked the blaze.
