Starmont Community School District Superintendent Troy Heller says the high school cancelled its homecoming football game due to a low number of players.

Heller says the team had 22 players at the beginning of the season.

Now, they're down to just 13 players.

Nine have significant injuries, says Heller.

In a phone conversation, he explained that the trainer checked all of football players Wednesday night.

Heller said some of the players were putting on a brave face, really trying to convince the trainer they were able to play.

Ultimately, the trainer decided it was best for the injured to sit out.

Heller said at least one has a concussion, and some injuries are more long-term; some students might not even be back to play next year.

He said they have notified any future opponents of their situation, but they hope to finish the season strong.
