DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Kids in Dubuque are finishing up bible school in a different way.

Pastor John Crawford had his head shaved like a monk after kids at St. Paul's Lutheran Church raised $700 for charity. Thursday, July 13, 2017 (Allison Wong/KCRG-TV9)

Pastor John Crawford told the kids at St. Paul's Lutheran Church if they raised $500 for charity, he would shave his head.

The kids raised over $700.

That money is going to buy bibles for kids in the neighborhood.

Crawford had his head shaved like a monk, with a bald spot in the middle of his hair, because the theme of the bible camp was "Mighty Fortress".

The haircut also coincides with the 500 year anniversary of the start of the reformation, because Martin Luther's hair was cut that way.

Despite his new haircut, he says he's happy the kids raised so much money.

He said, "I was really hoping we'd get to $499 and just stop honestly. But I'm really glad that we surpassed $700, I think it's awesome and worthwhile for looking like a fool for a little bit."

Crawford says each year the church raises money for a different cause.
