Smoke detectors did not work during Cedar Rapids house fire

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) Firefighters responded to a house fire early Saturday morning.

Authorities say the fire happened around 5:15 a.m., along 21st Street Northwest.

Crews say the fire spread to the attic. Firefighter cut a hole in the roof to help get smoke out of the building.

People living in the home were able to escape before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported and the Red Cross is helping.

The fire is under investigation. Authorities do not believe the smoke detectors worked.
