Shipping container home in Cedar Rapids finally on the market
Last summer, a group called CargoHab started something new in home construction in Cedar Rapids.
It was a single family home made out of four steel shipping containers set into place by a large crane.
And nearly a year later, that unusual home is finally finished and just listed for sale at $460,000.
Investors in CargoHab hosted an open house on Friday for area realtors.
While using shipping containers as the building blocks of a home is new in eastern Iowa it has been tried elsewhere.
Casey Cornwell, a member of the CargoHab group, said the reaction from potential buyers may determine if investors try it again.
And investors did learn some lessons.
"We learned we underestimated the time frame because everything in here is custom--nothing's the same, nothing's store bought. So it did take quite a bit of time as well," Cornwell said.
A total of four 45-foot shipping containers were used in the project.
Investors described it as a "proof of concept" home that will hopefully appeal to someone who wants a one-of-a-kind house.
