DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Iowa Senator Joni Ernst says decisions on social issues like which rest rooms transgender students should use should come at the state level.

She made that comment during a taping of Iowa Public Television's show, "Iowa Press." North Carolina recently passed a law requiring people to use rest rooms according to the gender on their birth certificates.

But this month, the Obama administration directed public schools across the country to allow transgender students to use rest rooms and locker rooms that match the gender they identify with. Ernst called that an overreach of federal power.

"We honed in on this specific issue when we have so many other issues that we need to be addressing right now. This was a state issue to be addressed by the state of North Carolina. We have addressed it here in Iowa," Ernst said.

Ernst's full interview will be on IPTV's "Iowa Press" at noon on Sunday.
