School districts that are providing meals for children while classes canceled

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Many children rely on school lunches as a significant source of nutrition during a given day. So, some eastern Iowa school districts are offering meals for pick-up during the extended time away from classes due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Benton Community School District

The district has partnered with local community organizations to arrange sack lunches for kids aged 1 to 18. Families should call (319) 228-8701 Extension 119 or email with the number of lunches they will need to help make sure there are enough to go around. Sacks include a breakfast item for the next day.

  • Atkins: Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Blairstown: Grace Lutheran Church, 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Elberon: Community Center, 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Keystone: St. John's Lutheran Church, 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Newhall: St. Paul's Catholic Church, 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Norway: St. Michael's Catholic Church, 11:00 a.m - Noon
  • Van Horne: Salem United Methodist Church, 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

    College Community School District

    The district is offering "Grab N' Go" meals for all children 18 and under Monday through Friday until further notice. Each child will receive a lunch and a breakfast for the following day. New USDA Guidance allows parents to pick up meals without their children being present.

    Cedar Rapids Community School District

    Students can get a hot lunch and breakfast intended for the following day between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday through Friday starting Monday, March 23.

    Dubuque Community Schools

    Grab-and-go meals will be offered Monday-Friday for kids 18 and under beginning on March 23.

    Locations include:

  • Audubon Elementary: 4:45 – 5:30 p.m. for dinner
  • Boys and Girls Club: 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. for dinner
  • Comiskey Park: 3:30 – 4:15 p.m. for dinner
  • Convivium: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for lunch
  • DREAM Center: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 4 – 5:30 p.m. for breakfast and dinner
  • Hempstead High School: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for lunch and next-day breakfast
  • Hoover Elementary: 5:15 – 6: p.m. for dinner
  • Lincoln Elementary: 4:45 – 5:30 p.m. for dinner
  • Marshall Elementary: 3:30 – 4:15 p.m. for dinner
  • Prescott Elementary: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for lunch and next-day breakfast
  • Terrace Heights: 4:15 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. for dinner, 4001 Peru Road

    Iowa City Community School District

    Drive-through or walk-up sites providing both lunch for that day and breakfast for the following day. Families can pick up meals between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

  • Twain Elementary School
  • West High School
  • Wood Elementary School

    In addition to the pick-up locations listed above, grab-and-go meals will be available for pickup at these locations:

  • Cole/Thatcher Mobile Home Park
  • Lakeridge Mobile Home Park
  • Regency Mobile Home Park

    Linn-Mar Community School District

    Grab-and-go meals will be available each weekday, starting March 23, between 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Locations include:

  • Bowman Woods Elementary
  • Linn Grove Elementary
  • Novak Elementary
  • Westfield Elementary
  • Wilkins Elementary
  • Oak Ridge Middle School
  • Linn-Mar High School

    In addition to the pick-up locations listed above, grab-and-go meals will be delivered to the following locations between 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.:

  • Marion Village Mobile Home Park
  • Squaw Creek Mobile Home Park
  • Valley View Apartments

    Marion ISD
    Starting March 30, the service will only be on Mondays and Thursdays and meals will be provided for multiple days each day.

    Locations include:

  • Francis Marion: 10 a.m. to noon
  • Longfellow: 10 a.m. to noon
  • Starry: 10 a.m. to noon
  • Vernon Middle: 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

    Waterloo Schools

    Beginning March 23, at any elementary school for children aged 18 or younger that are accompanied by parents.

    Locations include:

  • Cunningham: 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m
  • Kingsley: 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m
  • Orange: 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m
  • Highland: 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m
  • Kittrell: 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m
  • Becker: 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Lou Henry: 11:00 a.m. - Noon
  • Irving: Noon - 1:00 p.m.
  • Lincoln: Noon - 1:00 p.m.
  • Poyner: Noon - 1:00 p.m.
  • Education Service Center: 9:00 a.m. - Noon

    Western Dubuque Schools

    Breakfast (pick up for the next day) and lunch meals are available Monday through Friday from 11:30 am-12:30 pm at the locations below. Meals are being provided free to feed the children ages 18 and under.

    Locations include:

  • James Kennedy Public Library in Dyersville
  • Cascade Elementary School

    Project Rooted out of Dubuque is providing lunch from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the parking lots of:

  • Western Dubuque High School in Epworth,
  • Drexler Middle School in Farley, and
  • Peosta Elementary in Peosta
