SYC: Single moms in Eastern Iowa form group to share tips and experiences

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - It can be extremely difficult to raise a child on your own. One mom who's been through it is trying to make a difference for those like herself.

Time is running out for one single mother living out of a motel in Cedar Rapids. After a carbon monoxide leak and late rent payments, she didn't know where else to go.

"I literally have been doing everything I possibly can to try and make ends meet and I've been paying weekly which It's really expensive," Ramsey said.

The motel has only bought her so much time.

"I have until Tuesday and I don't know what I'm going to do after Tuesday I don't have anywhere to go at all," Ramsey said.

Just when she had nowhere else to turn, something unexpected happened. A stranger brought her a gift of soaps and perfumes.

That stranger was Starlet Smith. Another single mom on a mission to help other single mothers in the area.

Smith is starting a group called FiredUp for Single Moms. So far-- she's been using it to do small giveaways on her Facebook page.

"Crazy, crazy I had a giveaway on my Facebook page it was for a Bath and Body Works set one girl won it and she was like no, no, no there's another girl that could actually use something like this," Smith said,

It's what she intends the group to be all about, single mothers getting together every month to share their experiences and uplift each other. In time she hopes it will be uplifting enough that moms feel more comfortable and successful raising their children.

"It's nice to know in a world full of hate right now with all this going on that there are people that care about us trying to raise our kids," Smith said.

Creating special bonds so that no one has to go it alone.

The first two meetings will be at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. They are set for September 14 at 6 p.m. and October 21 at 11 a.m.

The group is also raising funds for Ramsey. Click on the link if you would like to donate.
