CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) -- The weight of heavy snow along with ice dams on some homes are keeping roofing companies busy.
Ice dams can form along roof-lines, creating a ridge that prevents melting snow from draining off. That can force water that’s under the ice to back up underneath the shingles which can cause damaging leaks inside a home.
One roofer says every house is at risk, but newer homes are built to prevent such problems.
"If you have an older home you want to be extra cautious because roof systems built 20 years ago aren't the same as they are now. We have better trusses," Greg Saunders, general manager of Pa's Roofing & Construction, said.
Saunders says the quickest way to prevent damaging ice dams is to use a snow rake to pull excess snow off the roof. Better attic insulation and roof ventilation are the best ways to prevent ice buildup in the future.
