New effort to legalize marijuana in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - There's a new effort to legalize marijuana.

State senator Joe Bolkcom of Iowa City introduced a bill to end marijuana prohibition. Right now, medical marijuana is allowed for specific illnesses.

Bolkcom suggests regulating marijuana like alcohol, saying it would add new economic activity to the state.

"Legal marijuana is coming to the Midwest," he said. "It's time for us in Iowa to begin to have a serious discussion on how we might tackle that, or move away from prohibition."

Bolkcom admits the legislation has little chance of moving forward this year in the Republican-controlled legislature.
