Presidential prospect shows support for Johnson Co. supervisor candidate

JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) -- A candidate running in the Johnson County Board of Supervisors special election is getting some support from a potential 2020 presidential candidate.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker released a video Wednesday to the political website "Iowa Starting Line" urging people to vote for Royceann Porter. Porter, a Democrat, is a Teamsters union organizer. She is running against Republican Phil Hemingway in the December 18 special election to fill a spot left vacant by the death of Supervisor Kurt Friese.

Today, Booker said this is a critical election for Johnson County.

"We need folks to turn out and vote. Your voice makes a difference on this critical office. So please, Royceann Porter – she's an extraordinary person who inspires me," Sen. Booker said.

He has been one of the most active potential presidential candidates. Last month, he called several Iowa candidates to congratulate them on wins on election night. Booker has not officially announced a run for president in 2020.
