Cedar Rapids Police said they arrested a suspect involved in a disturbance and high speed chase before barricading himself in an apartment on the southwest side early Friday morning.
According to a news release, officers responded to a disturbance call just after 1 a.m. in the 700 block of 3rd Street SW. A female victim reported 22-year-old Christopher McGee had stolen items from her, including a safe. The victim told police McGee displayed a handgun during the incident.
Police found McGee in a vehicle in the alley behind the residence. Officers said McGee refused to stop and they pursued him through several blocks on the southwest side. They said the chase reached high speeds on Wilson Avenue SW and several other streets. Witnesses told KCRG-TV9 6 six or seven police vehicles were involved in that chase.
Police said McGee eventually pulled into the parking lot at Cedar Valley Townhomes, also known as the J Street Apartments, at 3000 J Street SW. McGee ran into the 2700 building and entered an apartment while carrying a handgun.
More than a dozen police cars and a mobile command center set up a perimeter outside complex, including the departments Special Response Team.
Residents said police evacuated the rest of the building and cut power to it.
Officers entered the apartment about 4:45 a.m. and arrested McGee on a felony warrant for felon in possession of a weapon, attempt to elude, and numerous traffic violations. They said other charges are likely.
Police said there were no injuries.
It's not the first time police have responded to the Cedar Valley Townhomes recently. A shooting at the same complex on February 23 resulted in the city's first homicide of the year.
