A Des Moines man is behind bars Tuesday after being charged with enticing a minor.

Authorities said 18-year-old Delbert Casey sent sexual messages to a 12-year-old girl and showed up to her middle school in an attempt to sexually assault her.

Authorities said he would often send the girl messages on Facebook Messenger. Court documents show he tried to entice her away from school and communicated with her about the specific sexual acts he wanted to perform when they met.

“It's illegal and it's just a bad situation that we need to all work to prevent,” Des Moines Public Schools spokesman Phil Roeder said.

Casey now has a no-contact order against the 12-year-old victim.

Roeder said the victim's parents found out Casey was coming to Goodrell Middle School and notified school officials.

“The first priority is, ‘What can we do to keep our kids safe?’” Roeder said.

School officials said they made sure the 12-year-old victim was never alone when school was dismissed and always picked up by a family member.

“You hate when things like this happen, but the most important thing is to be aware when there is something not only out of the ordinary but in this case, criminal,” Roeder said.

It is unclear what relationship, if any, existed between the suspect and the victim. School officials said the 12-year-old was not harmed.
