An area that some supporters believe may have the potential to become the next NewBo district in Cedar Rapids is up for some public planning discussion in two weeks.
The proposed “College District” would include Coe College, Mt. Mercy University and all the neighborhoods, like Moundview, and commercial areas in between.
A workshop planned for Tuesday, July 18th will explore how the city might shape an overall development plan for the area to maximize benefits.
Supporters say there is plenty of development already going on.
Rod Pritchard, a spokesperson for Coe College and board member, says that’s why hopes are high the College District area could be the next in Cedar Rapids to take off.
“Here at Coe College, we’ve just completed one of the largest capital projects in college history. Mt. Mercy University is investing a lot of money. There’s been investments in the neighboring Med Quarter and along First Avenue as well,” he said.
Coe College helped originate the Uptown District that was formed about 10 years ago. That district would be folded into the planning area to be known as the College District.
The workshop is set to take place at the Shores Event Center, 700 16th St. N.E. on Tuesday, July 18th. It will run from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm.
