PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wisc. (KCRG-TV9) -- One attraction in Prairie du Chien offers a good glimpse of the history of the entire area.
The Fort Crawford Museum sits on the site of a military fort that once overlooked the Mississippi River
The forts existed primarily to keep peace among the Native American tribes in the region and to prevent hostilities between the Indians and American settlers.
But the fort also played a key role in the world of medicine.
This building is a restoration of the fort's military hospital where a doctor named William Beaumont conducted a fascinating series of experiments in the early 1800s.
He focused primarily on one patient… Alexis St. Martin.
