Many people living and visiting Our Town Kalona were disappointed when the Kalona Cheese Factory north of the city closed in 2014. It had been a popular site for many years...especially for people who loved its famous cheese curds. Then two years ago, the local Open Gates Business Development Corporation bought the property with plans of renovating the old cheese factory.
The new name is the Kalona Creamery, and it opened a new shop and deli this past January. Right now it's selling cheese curds from the Homestead Dairy in Waukon, but local production isn't far away.
"We'll be opening cheese curd production here, hopefully, fingers crossed, maybe yet this calendar year. For sure in 2018, if we don't make this year," said Mindy Seiffert of the Kalona Creamery.
But the future plans for the Kalona Creamery include much more, once the remodeling is over.
"People will be able to come in and see the cheese being made. Longer term projects planned over here. We will be moving our butter production over here as well, making artisan butter right here in this facility too," said Seiffert.
The Kalona Creamery, just one of the many attractions that make Our Town Kalona a great place to visit...and an even better place to live.
