Officials in Iowa City are looking for a new location to house a temporary emergency winter homeless shelter.

For the past two years members of Shelter House, the areas only homeless shelter, have opened an additional "low-barrier" shelter in the community during the winter months. The shelter allows people who are intoxicated a place to sleep, unlike Shelter House, which is a family environment and requires people to be sober before entering.

Two years ago the shelter operated out of an old grocery store building, and last year an old office building.

Last year 175 different people used it, officials said. This year neither location is available, and now officials are searching for a new spot, which they hope to open by mid-December.

Officials said they need a building that can accommodate a couple dozen people and that has bathrooms. Anyone with a location in mind is encouraged to contact Shelter House.
