New maps show changing flood risk in Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) -- Wednesday night people in Cedar Falls got to see if they could be at risk of flooding this spring and summer.

FEMA and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources showed them new flood maps. These maps show how flood risks have changed, and if maybe new structures had been built or taken down in the area.

Since the floods of 2008 the maps have helped people, businesses, and the city know how to keep people and property safe from flooding.

"Our flood plain mapping program actually got started because of the floods of '08. There was a lot of the money from the federal government and we were tasked with creating a flood plain mapping program," Jason Conn, Iowa DNR program planner, said.

FEMA will map out Cedar Rapids next month.
