New law aims to improve VA hospital wait times

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KCRG-TV9) -- The president has signed into law a bill that hopes to decrease wait times at veterans' affairs hospitals across the country.

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst co-sponsored the Faster Care for Veterans Act. A June 2014 Department of Veterans Affairs audit showed more than 120,000 veterans waited at least 90 days for appointments.

The bill establishes an 18-month pilot self-scheduling appointment system at V.A. medical facilities.

Some hospitals and health systems have already developed and started trying technology that ensures every available appointment is used.
