A Heisman Trophy winning football player has brought his other passion to Cedar Rapids - barbeque.

Billy Sims Barbecue held a soft opening Friday at their new location near Edgewood And Blairs Ferry Roads. That's in the Fountains Shopping Center.

Sims is the co-owner and namesake of the restaurant. He won the Heisman Trophy back in 1978 while playing collegiate ball for the University of Oklahoma, and played for the Detroit Lions as a running back.

Jesse Sergeant is the Assistant Manager at Billy Sims.

"He does it all himself," said Sergeant. "He's a very good guy. He'll go over there and hold the door for people. He'll greet every guest. Make sure he talks to everybody."

Sims is expected to be at the restaurant all day Saturday for its official grand opening.

This is the second location for Billy Sims in Iowa. The first location opened in Burlington. Other locations could open in the future in Muscatine and Dubuque.
