Mount Mercy University orientation includes service activities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG TV9)-- Mount Mercy University students got ready for classes this semester by giving back to the Cedar Rapids community.

About 100 freshman and transfer students spent Sunday afternoon doing service projects across Cedar Rapids.

Some groups picked up trash, others helped clean benches and lights.

These service activities are part of orientation. Student leaders say it's a good way for classmates to bond, and learn the university's values.

"Service is a large one we try and get out there to help in the community and this is just a simple and really easy way that we can go out and help by picking up trash of the streets," Service Peer Minister Jessica Hiney said.

Mount Mercy begins its classes Wednesday.
