More than just football: Green Bay Packers surprise Dubuque Senior students
"As you go to the gymnasium, please walk safe and respectfully." These were the instructions Principal Dan Johnson gave to students over the PA system inside Dubuque Senior High School around 1:30 on Wednesday. He just told them they were having a surprise assembly with some special guests.
Students filed in and did not know what the assembly was for or who was coming.
When players from the Green Bay Packers walked in, teachers and students applauded and cheered.
The Packers stopped by on their Tailgate Tour to talk with students about bullying, social media responsibility and respect. Player Ty Montgomery told the students "love is choice" and to love people just as you love yourself.
Several students were also given the chance to ask the players questions like, "what inspires you to keep positive?" And, "How you do stay fighting when things get tough?"
At the end of the assembly, Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy present Johnson with a $2,000 check to go towards the school's physical education program.
Johnson said he had known about the visit for a while.
"I knew about it last year and it's been difficult to keep it under wraps," he said. "Even today when I let the teachers know we had a special group coming in and they still didn't know so rumors were flying fast and furious."
