MARION, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- A new YMCA is set to go up between Excelsior Middle School and Linn-Mar High School in Marion. Monday night, representatives from the Marion Y met with the school board to talk about plans for the new building.

The Y wants to break ground at the end of this summer. The project is expected to cost around 19 and a half million dollars. The new building will include a swimming pool, four gymnasiums, racquetball courts, and several multi-purpose rooms. The Y says the current facility is too small for the needs of a growing community.

"The Marion YMCA was built in 1963 and the population of Marion at that time was about 12,000," Project Manager, Zach Bohannon said. "There is now currently three times that, 38,000 and the Y is the last building still serving its original purpose when it was built."

The Y hopes to finish by fall of 2018.
