WAVERLY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Authorities responded to a fireworks-related injury on the 1600 block of 190th Street in rural Waverly on July 7.

18-year-old Coltin Carolus had life-threatening injuries after igniting fireworks with friends over the weekend.

Authorities say Carolus was lighting off the fireworks when he got too close to a device that may have malfunctioned. The firework exploded on the ground instead of being shot into the air and then exploding.

No one else was injured.

Carolus was taken to the Waverly Hospital and later transported to Covenant Hospital in Waterloo, where he remained on life support.

At about 5:30 p.m. Sunday he was taken off life support and his organs were donated.

The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Waverly Ambulance Service and Bremer County Dispatch.

The Bremer County Sheriff's office says an 18-year-old man was hurt by fireworks in Waverly late Saturday night.

Authorities say he was hurt at a rural home in Waverly around 11:30 p.m. July 7.

No details about the man's condition have been released.
