OAKDALE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - A former Marshall County man convicted of second-degree murder in 2014 has died at the Iowa Medical Classification Center in Oakdale.

According to a Department of Corrections new release, 42-year-old Matthew Irving collapsed in the Hospice Care Unit Wednesday. The on duty doctor pronounced him dead of natural causes. Doctors had previously diagnosed Irving with Sclerosing Epitheliod Fibrosarcoma with Metastasis to lungs and bones.

Irving was serving a 50 year sentence for killing 55-year-old Rebecca Hall of Marshalltown in July 2013. A Marshall County jury convicted Irving in July 2014.

At his trial, Irving testified he'd sought out Hall to use meth and have sex with her. He said he accidentally killed her in self defense after she attacked him. A medical examiner said Hall was smothered.
