Sen. Jeff Danielson: "My leaving the senate is directly linked to leaving the firehouse"
A longtime state senator from Black Hawk County is resigning his position, a month into the 2019 session effectively immediately.
Democratic Senator Jeff Danielson submitted his letter of resignation yesterday in a 10-word statement to Senate leadership.
Danielson told TV9 on Friday morning he is leaving because he's leaving his job as a Cedar Falls firefighter over the recent move to cross-train police officers as firefighters.
"There is no future there for firefighters and I can't make the Senate service work given that I have to raise my family and pay the bills," he said in a statement to TV9.
He said he will be the 11th Cedar Falls firefighter to resign in the last two years.
He first won his Senate seat in 2004 to represent parts of Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Hudson.
There will be a special election to fill this vacancy.
