Local radio personality to open Cedar Rapids bar, replacing Red's Public House

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) -- Less than a week after a Cedar Rapids bar closed its doors for good, new ownership is preparing to take over.

A new bar called Jimmy Z's will replace Red's Public House on 2nd Street SE. Local radio personality Jaymz Larson from 94.1 KRNA is leading the new ownership group.

Larson said he always liked going to Red's Public House, and thought the location and the timing made for a great opportunity to get into the business.

"The last few months I saw the place slowly [fading], fewer people in here, the service wasn't as good- I knew something was up," Larson said. "So one day I called the owner of the building and said: what would it take to open this place up and here we are."

Larson said his goal for the time being is to bring the space back to its former glory.

"I don't want to change a bunch of things, I want to clean it up though," Larson said. "I want breakfasts back on the weekends, maybe during the week, I want good Happy Hour specials. I'm not a bar owner, I never have been a bar owner so I just want to treat people well and get people down here and have a lot of fun."

Larson said the space is going to have a TV and radio theme when they finally open up. He said if all goes as planned, he is looking to open the bar early December.
