Local officers go back-to-school shopping

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9)-- Police officers from Marion and Cedar Rapids spent their afternoon back-to-school shopping.

More than 100 kids got to shop with a cop to pick out all their school supplies and pick up some other necessities, like underwear or gym shoes.

Officers say the activity is a good way to remind kids cops are real people too.

"We want them to know we're moms and dads too. We go to church and grocery stores like they do. We want them to be able to come to us if they need help," Officer Charity Hansel said.

The families don't have to pay anything for this shopping excursion. All the money used for the event is through donations from businesses, families and from the very own pockets of the police officers.
