Linn-Mar students hold vigil for classmates who died in car crash
Students responded Friday night to the sudden deaths of two classmates in the Linn-Mar District. They held a vigil at Linn-Mar High School.
Thursday afternoon, a three vehicle crash on County Home Road near North Troy Road killed Selena Apodaca, 16, and her sister, Isabella Severson, 13.
The Linn County Sheriff's Department says the girls were riding in a car with their mother and two other sisters when a pick-up rear-ended them. The impact pushed their car into another pick-up in front of them. The crash also injured the mother, Jennifer Perez, and the other two girls, ages four and 14.
"When I found out it was Bella, I just broke down,” friend of Bella, Mercedes Lehmkuhl said.
Students prayed and let go of balloons with messages written to the girls.
"She was really nice and funny, she has a great personality,” Lehmkuhl said.
They wore purple because it was the oldest, Selena's favorite color. They also sang Justin Bieber because it was her favorite artist.
"We love her and we will always remember her and that we want her to come back…. And we know she's in the best place that she can be in right now,” Lehmkuhl said.
A GoFundMe for the family has raised nearly $30,000 so far.
