HIAWATHA, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- On September 25 Linn-Mar High School senior Brandon Pate asked his girlfriend Cameron Hankemeier, a senior at Marion High School, to homecoming.

However, his homecoming proposal wasn't the usual one you would expect.

Pate asked the Hiawatha Police Department to help him with the homecoming proposal.

Using a creative play on words and an officer's squad car, Pate was sure his idea would work.

Pate and Hankemeier are both Fire Explorers at Hiawatha Fire & Rescue.

Hankemeier was driving to a meeting at the fire station when she saw what appeared to be a traffic stop involving her boyfriend.

As she pulled into the parking lot to investigate, Hiawatha Police Officer Keeney opened the back door to his squad car, revealing Pate.

Pate was holding signs saying, "It would be a crime to say no, so police go to homecoming with me?"

The homecoming proposal caught Hankemeier by surprise and she said yes.
